All is sunshine and rainbows in Chicago, when a portal springs open and shoots out three small girls, named Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup. Dr. Moody, an evil, villainous scientist, was back in town, threatening to destroy the Powerpuff Girls - the three girls' alias - and keep them away from the public eye indefinitely. With help from Jerry, a local reporter in the city in Illinois, the Powerpuff Girls set out on a heartstopping mission to save Chicago from Dr. Moody's wrath.

A remake to The Powerpuff Girls Movie was originally announced in 2004 following the commercial failure of the latter film. Originally in a bidding war between Viacom and TimeWarner, the first of the latter acquired the shareholding rights to the franchise in July 2004, with development planning to begin in September. However, after negotiations with Paramount Pictures CEO Sherry Lansing, TimeWarner purchased the rights to The Powerpuff Girls in December 2004, though had announced they had indefinitely cancelled the film.

The film was given the green light in 2021, with the idea of it being a blend of live-action and animation, similar to those of The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, Space Jam: A New Legacy, Sonic the Hedgehog, The Smurfs and Alvin and the Chipmunks. Principal photography commenced in June 2022 in Chicago, Illinois, with additional filming in Los Angeles, Sacramento and San Francisco. Produced by Warner Bros. Pictures Animation, Cartoon Network Studios and Original Film, the animation was produced at Reel FX Animation Studios and Mikros Image, with DNEG and Moving Picture Company providing visual effects. Premiering at the El Capitan Theatre on April 2, 2024, the film was theatrically released in the United States on April 12, 2024 by Warner Bros. Pictures in 2D, 3D, RealD 3D, IMAX 3D, 4DX and Dolby Cinema formats.
