The Rocky Horror Picture Show is a 2023 American science-fiction mystery comedy-drama horror musical film. It is the second film adaptation of the 1973 musical stage production The Rocky Horror Show, with music, book, and lyrics by O'Brien in celebration of its upcoming 50th anniversary.
Synopsis[]
After their car breaks down in the middle of a dark forest, two best friends from high school stumble upon an old, abandoned manor currently owned by a mad scientist, who creates a living muscle man in his secret laboratory hidden within the highest room of the tallest tower of his castle.
Plot[]
The film is framed at a movie theatre where a post-graduation party was held hosted by graduates Brad Majors and Janet Weiss, who have been engaged and therefore be marrying next week.
The story, as told by Brad and Janet, opens to one year ago ("Denton U.S.A.") with the wedding of Ralph Hapschatt, Brad's tutor, and Betty Munroe, one of Janet's friends. After Ralph and Betty drive off to their honeymoon, Brad and Janet, who were high school juniors back then, express their friendship and love with each other since childhood ("Dammit, Janet").
Meanwhile, a local transgender mad scientist, Dr. Frank-N-Furter, has been accused of kidnapping by Denton High School graduate, Edward "Eddie" Scott, on The Jerry Springer Show, forced to confess that he is currently working on his latest project back in his castle hideout. When one of the suspects attempt to challenge his authority, Frank creates chaos on the show to escape the confusion.
Later that night, Brad and Janet are on the road to a retirement home where their former science teacher, Dr. Everett Scott, currently resides when a lightning bolt hits one of the tires of their Ford Model T car, resulting in a major blowout. Brad decides to go to the castle and phone the mechanic, but when Janet asks if she can tag along, he reluctantly agrees to let her come with him ("Over at the Frankenstein Place"). Once they arrive at the castle, they meet Riff Raff, Frank's righthand man, Magenta, Riff Raff's sister and head house-maid, and Columbia, Frank's slave whom Brad and Janet never recognized before, and together, they welcome the lucky duo ("The Time Warp"). The next person they turn to for help is Dr. Frank-N-Furter himself ("Sweet Transvestite"), who agrees to assist them in their plight, but not before ordering for them to be decontaminated first after seeing their condition over the fact they were caught in a terrible storm along the way here.
After decontamination, Brad and Janet participate in an attendance watching the creation of Rocky Horror directed by Frank ("The Sword of Damocles"), along with his baptism ("The Demonstration Song"). Suddenly, Eddie bursts into Frank's lab to rescue Columbia by force ("Hot Patootie"), but was captured and thrown in the dungeon, allowing Frank's baptism to continue peacefully along with Frank's blessing ("The Demonstration Song (reprise)").
After the ceremony, Brad and Janet have been escorted into separate rooms contained in men's and ladies' dormitories. Brad visits Janet, and the two talk about their plight tonight together, with Janet asking if Brad's father taught him on how to be a man ("Thank God, I'm a Man"), on which Brad affirms. After Brad returns to his room, he and Janet fall fast asleep, hoping they will soon be back on the road by morning once their car is fixed ("Lullaby").
Back to reality, the film projector overheats the film, but when Riff Raff and Magenta fix the film, we return to screening.
On the second half of the story, Frank sneaks into Janet's and Brad's rooms to make love with them, but not before warning them not to tell each other what happened first, but while he's making love with Brad, Riff Raff bursts into the room to inform him that Rocky has escaped.
While frantically searching for Brad to ensure he's not hurt, Janet expresses her fear and mourns her situation ("Beautiful Ghosts") when she notices Rocky hiding in Frank's laboratory. After tending his wounds, Janet asks Rocky to locate Brad for her. Using the television monitor, Rocky reveals Frank seducing Brad in his room, hurting and outraging Janet. Janet plans to commit suicide, but Rocky prevents her from doing so, urging her to let bygones be bygones. Rocky takes Janet to the ballroom, where she soothes her own mood by performing a pole dance to entertain him; he joins in, and the two share a kiss, much to the surprised reaction to Magenta and Columbia, who arrive there to check on Rocky ("Touch-a-touch-a-touch me!").
Meanwhile, Brad arrives at the ladies dormitory to check on Janet when he discovers she was seemingly raped to death by Frank; he places blame on him, but Frank and Riff Raff are forced to retreat to the lab to shut the power down so they can find Rocky by morning, leaving Brad to sing a eulogy to Janet ("Once in a While"). Back at the lab, Brad confronts Frank again, arguing that he is, in reality, a child abductor. After a scuffle, Frank ties Brad onto a chair until his troubles are over when Brad's science teacher, Dr. Scott, arrives, looking for Eddie, who is also his nephew. However, Frank announces Eddie's death to Dr. Scott, moving him completely. Frank, Dr. Scott, Brad, and Riff Raff then discover Janet and Rocky together under the sheets in Rocky's birth tank, upsetting Frank but relieving Brad after she told the truth about Rocky's plight in front of everybody. A finally fed-up Frank plans to whip Janet for seducing Rocky, but is interrupted by Magenta, who announces that a banquet for Rocky has been prepared.
During the banquet, Dr. Scott reveals Frank and other inhabitants of his castle as aliens, who came from an unknown planet to seduce mankind, even his nephew ("The Ballad of Eddie"). Convinced, Frank displays Eddie's corpse to the group, enraging Janet, who believes that Eddie is the only one to also help her escape from his castle. The furious Janet chases Frank to his lab with an axe taken from a knight statue, attempting to avenge Eddie's death by killing him ("Planet Schmanet, Janet!"), but Frank turns on Medusa Transducer to stop her, transforming her into a nude statue along with Brad and Dr. Scott. Suddenly, Columbia bursts into the lab wielding Eddie's gun and holds the castle staff hostage until Frank turns the human trio back to normal while revealing herself as a human earthling. More convinced, Frank turns Columbia into a statue as well, followed by Rocky. Magenta soon begs that they should return to their home planet since they have been found out, but Frank refuses, revealing there is also blood in her hands as well.
As a punishment for all their actions, Brad, Janet, Columbia, and Rocky are forced to perform a floor show directed by Frank ("The Floor Show Medley") while Dr. Scott is kept in the dungeon to rot for the rest of his days until he is freed by Riff Raff and Magenta now donned in space military suits. When he discovers this jailbreak, Frank tries to apologize for his actions ("I'm Going Home"), but it was too late, for he is sentenced to death for his disgraced campaign and overwhelming lifestyle. Columbia, Frank, and Rocky are all killed in the massacre, sparing Brad, Janet, and Dr. Scott as they are transported outside the castle to safety. After watching the castle crumble into rubble to reveal a UFO, which blasts off into the morning sky, the trio soon returns to Denton on Brad's and Janet's now fixed car, driving off into the sunrise.
In the post-credits scene, Brad, Janet, and Dr. Scott share their story on Jerry Springer, closing the whole case on this one. After the case is officially closed, Brad not only suggest that she and Janet might run a detective business together, but he asks if she will marry him, and Janet quickly and happily accepts his proposal.
