Production
Development
Development on Shrek!: The Steig-Tacular Movie! started in 1991. Don Bluth & Gary Goldman had acquired the book around with Fox Family Films & Blue Sky/VI-FX as well back in May 19, 1991.
Behind the scenes during production, Don Bluth & Gary Goldman had been working with Blue Sky Studios and 20th Century Fox. William Steig wrote the story and started planning the storyboard on April 16, 1992. Will B. Johnson & Don Bluth served as the directors and Tina Sharp served as producer. Storyboarding wrapped up during on June 12, 1993.
Voice casting
During test recordings, Chevy Chase was originally set to be casted as Shrek. However, Steve J. Sullivan got the role as the character, with test audiences saying Sullivan's performance as Shrek was "funnier", "smarter" and "very fun". Sullivan said in a 1993 interview that he had "expressed interest during the test recordings alongside Chevy", and when he got the role, he said that he "never thought of getting the role. I always thought Chevy would get the role instead of me. But, here we are!"

The film was animated entirely in Wang Film Productions and Blue Sky/VI-FX.

The critical consensus reads, "Kindless, very funny and it's so ogre-blast! Shrek!: The Steig-Tacular Movie! scares to the biggest prime example for ypur own family and some kids entertainment, and the voice roles is so very funny and so-so hilarious." Metacritic assigns the film a score of 85 out of 100, based on 41 critics, indicating "universal acclaim". Audiences polled by CinemaScore assigned the film an average grade of "A" on its A+ to F scale.
