The End of Quincy is a 2013 live action-animated hybrid action drama film based on the television series The Story of Quincy. It was directed, produced, and co-written by series creator Garrett Fredrickson. The movie features the show's cast of Maurice LaManche, Evan Rachel Wood, Jim Cummings, Richard Steven Horvitz, and Aaron Paul, and also features new actors which include Jonathan Freeman, Michael Clarke Duncan, Glenn Close, Will Ferrell, Christopher Plummer, and George S. Irving. In this film, Quincy (LaManche) has to stop a potential apocalypse of the Hands that's being initiated by a hand named Dr. Muskimz (Freeman).

The film started development back in 2007, when Season 3 of The Story of Quincy was still airing, but production didn't start until 2009 when Season 4 of the series ended. LIVE Entertainment and Gary Sanchez Productions produced the film, while The Weinstein Company, Gulfstream Pictures and Shangri-La Entertainment co-financed the movie. It was released to North American theaters by Warner Bros. Pictures on January 25th, 2013 in Digital 3D and IMAX 3D. The film received critical acclaim for it's tone, blending of live action and animation, voice acting, and cinematography, and grossed $1.056 billion. The movie was nominated for Academy Award for Best Picture, Academy Award for Best Cinematography, and Academy Award for Best Actress. It became the third highest grossing film of 2013, and Fredrickson's most profitable film. The film serves as the finale to the show, and was also the final movie to star Michael Clarke Duncan and George S. Irving, the former the movie is dedicated to the memory of.

Casting[]

Many of the same voice actors from the series reprised their roles for the movie: Maurice LaManche as Quincy, Evan Rachel Wood as Sophie, Jim Cummings as Klay, Randall, and Jack, Richard Steven Horvitz as Raymond, Aaron Paul, John Cleese as Zach, Stephen Fry, and Martin Short as The Mayor. In addition to the movie's main cast, it was announced in June 2012 that Jonathan Freeman, Michael Clarke Duncan, Glenn Close, Will Ferrell, Christopher Plummer, and George S. Irving would voice play new characters in the film.

George S. Irving was cast as The Chief based on his role as Heat Miser from The Year Without a Santa Claus, and accepted the role when offered, while Will Ferrell was brought on when Gary Sanchez Productions became part of the project. Christopher Plummer voiced The Retired One in place of Jeff Bennett, who previously voiced him in his original appearance in the series; Plummer was also reportedly a fan of Fredrickson's films, and was rather eager to do the part. Jonathan Freeman and Michael Clarke Duncan voiced both respective forms of the film's villain Dr. Muskimz, Freeman's casting was inspired by his role as Jafar from Disney's Aladdin while Clarke Duncan was cast as Fredrickson thought his voice fit the character.

Release[]

The first teaser trailer came out on March 13th, 2012, and was attached to 21 Jump Street and The Hunger Games. The second trailer was released on August 6th, 2012, and was attached to Hope Springs, The Bourne Legacy, The Words, Won't Back Down, and Argo. The End of Quincy opened in theaters on January 25th, 2013, it's world premiere was at the El Capitan Theatre on January 20th, 2013, with Garrett Fredrickson, Adam McKay, and Will Ferrell in attendance.

Fredrickson was given control over tie-in merchandizing, and secured deals with General Mills, Burger King, Baskin Robbins, TOMY, and M&Ms.

Home Media[]

Warner Home Video released The End of Quincy on DVD, Blu-Ray, 3-D Blu-Ray, and Digital Download on July 16th, 2013, like with the theatrical release, the movie was very successful on home video, with estimates indicating about 3.1 Million copies being sold by 5pm. The home video release contains an audio commentary, a "making-of" documentary for the movie, deleted scenes, a 20 minute animatic sequence, and the film's trailers and TV spots.

The End of Quincy was highly popular in theaters, making $94,832,463 from 5,743 screens in 4,382 theaters, and a total of $231,483,093 since Wednesday, making it the biggest opening weekend debut for a 2013 film at the time. By the end of it's theatrical run, the film grossed $1.056 billion worldwide, making it the highest grossing film directed by Garrett Fredrickson, and the third highest grossing film of 2013 overall.

Critical Response[]

On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 99% based on 183 reviews with an average score of 8.4/10. The site's critical consensus reads, "Heartfelt and action packed, The End of Quincy gives the television series it's based on an epic and rather emotional conclusion." Metacritic gave the film a score of 87 out of 100 based on 34 reviews, indicating "universal acclaim". According to Cinemascore, audiences gave the film a score a rare "A+" grade on an A+ to F scale.
