Ninjago City is a recently blooming technological paradise full of flying cars and extremely advanced technology. Acclaimed inventor Cyrus Borg has made the city a much better place due to his inventions, and has allowed for so many privileges of the first class. Due to this success, the tallest tower in the city is Borg Tower, the headquarters of Borg's company Borg Industries.

In Ninjago City, Kai Smith is a young high school senior who is waiting to get out of high school so he can start his dream career of being a welder. During school lunch, Kai and his best friends Jay Gordon-Walker, Zane Julien-Roberts, Cole Brimstone, and Lloyd Garmadon start talking about their plans for after the school day. Cole says that he and Kai were planning to go to the old temple for fun with Skylor Chen and Nya Smith. Jay asks if the other friends can come along, and Cole says that is alright with him, and Kai agrees. The five make it a plan, when Skylor and Nya walk up to them. The girls ask how the guys are doing, and Jay nervously says "good", while Lloyd confidently says that they are doing well. Nya laughs and blushes at Lloyd. Kai then says that it's all set, that the 7 will go to the old temple after school.

After school, Kai and Cole are riding bikes next to each other, heading to the old temple where they are supposed to meet up with the others. While riding their bikes, they encounter Morro Brees, who stops them. Morro, being a bully, asks them where they are heading. Kai tells him they are heading to the old abandoned temple. Morro laughs, saying that the temple isn't good for a bunch of "b****es" like themselves. Cole then shoves Morro into the wall of a building, which causes the building's owner, Dareth Francis, to come out and scold the three, telling them to move along. Kai and Cole leave, and arrive at the old abandoned temple, where the others are there waiting for them.

Zane tells the group that they should enter the building. Inside of the building, they see a plaque that says "all who enter may not leave alive", which scares Jay. The ninja continue forward, and find a statue of an old ninja master. Nya looks at the plaque and says "this was Master Yang", and they move along. Suddenly, a wall comes down behind them. Skylor looks behind and says "that's not good", and three more walls come down on the other sides. The kids are scared, and now they don't know what to do. Lloyd notices a green light, and runs for it. Kai sees a red light, and runs for it. Skylor sees an orange light, and runs for it. Nya notices a dim grey light and runs for it. Zane sees a white light, and runs for it. Cole sees a brown light, and runs for it. Jay sees a blue light, and runs for it. The group ends up inside of a secret laboratory, where an old man enters and says "We knew you would arrive one day."
