Amberstar‘s promise is a upcoming 2021 live action film directed and produced by Jon Favreau, written by Jeff Nathanson, and produced by Walt Disney Pictures. It is a photorealistic computer-animated film based on the novel of the same name.
Plot[]
The film begins with Winnowstar giving birth. Mothwing is shown to be assisting the queen through the process, commenting to her that she should relax. Winnowstar thinks up a remark, but before she can say it another contraction happens. From it she gives birth to a tom, which is announced by Mudthorn whom is seen to be attending the birth. Mothwing over sees the kit. Winnowstar opens her mouth in protest when a wet bundle of fur is pressed against her mouth. But when the kit's scent hits her nose, she opens her eyes and looks over her son, thinking about his father, Reedwhisker. Mothwing instructs her to lick the kit. Winnowstar looks over her son, and thinks about telling the other cats in the den to leave so she could sit with her kit, but another contraction breaks her away from these thoughts. Mistystar tends to the newborn kit when Mothwing asks her to. In the meanwhile, Winnowstar gives birth to another tom. Her second son described to be blue with brown torso and brown spots. Mothwing gives a few words of encouragement, telling the queen that only a single kit remains. Winnowstar then gave birth to a she-kit. Winnowstar, with the desire to be alone with her kits, has a boost of strength and delivers her final kit, another she-kit. The medicine cat notes the she-kit she is a runt of her littermates, but still healthy like them. Winnowstar sits up in her nest to see her litter, again mentioning their father in her thoughts. Reedwhisker comments that they look gorgeous, and Mistystar praises Winnowstar saying that she did a good job. Reedwhisker asks about their names, and Winnowstar indicates each kit as she names them; Larchkit for the brown and white tom, Patchkit for the blue and brown kit, Petalkit for the orange and light brown she-kit and Amberkit for the runt. Mistystar approves of these names and Reedwhisker says they are perfect. Winnowstar says she wants each kit to become their own warrior, not an echo of a dead cat. Mothwing purrs, saying RiverClan is blessed to have her as a queen, looking forward to seeing them grow up. Moons later, Petalkit tells Larchkit to watch her as she grips some dried moss and violently shakes it. Larchkit grabs it from her, tossing it across the clearing, making the two kits scamper after it. Petalkit reaches it first and flops on top of it. Amberkit wishes to join, but her siblings say that she is too little. She also wishes to be RiverClan’s next leader. One night she sees a mysterious cat. She wanders who that cat is. After several complaints from Amberkit's siblings addressing they don't like to play with her because she is so small, Amberkit asks if they want to help the medicine cats but they refused, bitting Amberkit’s ear off. Amberkit then leaves RiverClan while everyone is asleep just as it begins to rain. She then remembers that she wants to be the next RiverClan leader. She also remembers the orange-and-white she-cat and is determined to get to the Moonstone to speak with her and learn her destiny. As she emerges on the river bank, a flood sweeps away the kit. She then sees the StarClan cat and she says that she has the great destiny ahead of her. Amberkit makes it out, barely alive. On the way she meets a elder moose name Bark. She told bark that she was going to the Moonstone, Bark then wishes her good luck. Amberkit heads along the river on a steep path through WindClan territory. She reaches the waterfall and climbs up it, even as the path narrows significantly and water droplets spray her. On the way a WindClan apprentice named Breezepaw jerks back as Amberkit accidentally stepped on his tail and almost started to kill her. However Harepaw’s little brother, Stormkit stopped Foxpaw when he was about to kill Amberkit. He says that she had learned her lesson. Harepaw simply says that Foxpaw was defending their territory. The patrol heads back into the forest. She finally makes it to the stop, where she sees that the river gets flat again. She is able to see the jagged cliffs of Highstones in the distance. She heads on, and climbs up a pile of boulders in order to try to get view of Highstones. At the top of it, she can see Highstones. Amberkit looks back and sees a pair of eyes in the heather, and fearfully sprints away. She hears pawsteps behind her, gaining on her, but then she passes across the ThunderClan border and onto a stone path. She looks back and sees a rabbit is chasing her. She hears a growl behind her and looks back to sees bright eyes, realizing a monster was racing at her. She remembers monsters only traveled on Thunderpaths, so she backs off of it and watches, terrified, as the monsters streaks by and disappears. Thankful that the monster hadn't spotted her, she looks towards the Thunderpath, where the rabbit was lying, dead. She wonders if she should take the rabbit, as it was fresh-kill now, but decides not to, frightened at the sight of it. She darts across the Thunderpath to the safety of the hedges on the far side. She sees Highstones ahead, still distant, and continues forward, keeping to the edges of meadows where she could not be easily spotted. As the sky starts to pale, she realizes she won't reach Highstones before dawn. She heads through a gap in a stone wall and sees a huge wooden nest. She enters the nest, thinking it might be a good place to sleep. When she gets inside, she finds no warrior scent and some dry grass, so she heads into a dark corner and, exhausted, falls asleep. Amberkit finds herself in a dark, damp, misty forest rather than in the nest of straw she curled up in when she fell asleep. She hears a cat calling his name. It is the orange-and-white she-cat who has visited her before and who she believes to be a StarClan warrior. She emerges from the undergrowth, asking her how she could leave her Clan. Amberkit defends herself that she is going to the Moonstone, and questions as to where she is. The she-cat responds that she is dreaming, and asks the kit why ahe is going all the way to the Moonstone to speak with StarClan when she can answer all her questions right here in her dream. Amberkit concludes that she must be right, and that she is indeed a StarClan cat. The she-cat introduces herself as Mapleshade, and asks Amberkit what answers she is seeking. Amberkit replies that she wants to fulfill her destiny, and Mapleshade tells her that everything that happens to her is part of it. She offers to train her in secret, and Amberkit gladly accepts. Mapleshade tells Amberkit to make her a promise if she wants power over all the cats and Clans. She tells Amberkit to promise her to put her Clan above all things, and disregard her own needs for the needs of the Clan. Amberkit eagerly makes the promise. Amberkit is training with Mapleshade, and she keeps snapping at her telling her to keep her paws on the ground. She noses her hindquarters until her paws are firmly planted, then lets her try again. Amberkit concentrates hard, then rears up and slashes at a stick Mapleshade had stuck in the soil. She finds that with both paws steady, her blow is fiercer and stronger, and the stick tumbles on the third hit. Mapleshade praises her, telling her it was much better, and to try the move on her. Amberkit blinks at her, asking what will happen if she hurts her. Mapleshade snorts in response, saying that she can try. She faces Amberkit. Amberkit imagines that she is facing a ShadowClan warrior, and thinks that only the bravest survive. As her mind whirls with excitement, she rears up, but Mapleshade has disappeared. She suddenly feels fur on her belly and a weight pushes her up. She gets tossed in the air, and tries to land on her paws, but the ground comes too quickly and she lands heavily on her side. Winded, she struggles to her feet. Mapleshade sits a tail-length away and points out that a warrior doesn't daydream. Amberkit asks how she knew, and she responds that she lost her focus before she reared and that she could see it in her eyes. She continues, saying that he should fight the battle she's in, not the one she might be in. Amberkit blinks and asks if she can try again. Pain grips the young she-kit's shoulders, and she can still feel Mapleshade's claws as she opens her eyes. Dawn light filters into the nursery roof. Winnowstar looks down at Amberkit, who is curled up in the curve of her side, if she'd like to join in, saying her siblings look like they're having fun. She accepts and does it roughly. Winnowstar says to her not to rough. Amberkit ignores her and continues, and almost killing them, but she is stopped by Mistystar. Amberkit simply says she was just trying to be fierce. Amberkit, Petalkit, Larchkit and Patchkit receivie their apprentice names, Amberpaw, Petalpaw, Larchpaw and Patchpaw. Amberpaw however didn’t have a mentor. A rogue kit named Daffodil encounters Amberpaw on a solo patrol. Amberpaw attacks Daffodil, nearly killing her, but she is stopped by the more sympathetic Reedwhisker, who yowls at her to stop. He says that she had learned her lesson. Amberpaw simply says she was defending their territory. The two heads back into the forest. Amberpaw continues to train with Mapleshade. She berates her for getting the move wrong, and Amberpaw becomes frustrated. She tells Mapleshade that she needs to rest. She tries to explore 'StarClan's' forest, but Mapleshade stops her. She tells Amberpaw to remember her promise, hissing that she is not here to ask questions and is only here to learn. Amberpaw wakes to Larchpaw nudging her. Amberpaw simply says she was just having some rest. Amberpaw commands Larchpaw’s mentor to let him leave her alone and she obliged. When Acornpaw and Amberpaw fight, she successfully wins but ends up killing Acornpaw. Patchpaw asks what is wrong with her and she sarcastically responds that she was only defending their territory like apprentices always do. The next day there was a meeting, and it was just happening sooner than expected. Patchpaw whispers that he thinks something is happening. The clearing is filled with cats, all staring at them. Mistystar stands on the Highrock with Mudthorn and Mothwing. Patchpaw whimpers, asking one of his siblings, Amberpaw, what is going on. Mistystar announces that both Reedwhisker and Winnowstar were ran over by a monster. While the meeting was going on, Amberpaw hears the rumors about a kittypet named Saoirse and wonder that if the kittypet is Mosskit, one of bluestar’s kits. Amberpaw then announces that she will be the new leader. The accept and Amberpaw receives her nine lives. Amberstar thanks everyone and honors her family by receiving her siblings’ warrior names, Petalshine, Larchclaw and Patchfoot. Years later she sees stormkit, now stormfang. She tells Stormfang that she is expecting his kits. Stormfang, although shocked, purrs that it's incredible that he is going to be a father. Stormfang asks her what her Clanmates would feel about half-Clan kits. Amberstar insists that they wouldn't know, and the kits would be additional good warriors to the clan. She also tells him that it would be for the best to not see her until the kits come. Years later Stormfang had drowned by beechfur. She announces that she had a WindClan mate and apologizes. Years later she sees daffodil again. This time as a fully grown rogue. She tells her that she wants to see Saoirse and they went. Amberstar meets Saoirse and asks to come back. The kittypet refused, making Amberstar furious. Both Amberstar and Saoirse face off, and Saoirse wins and apologies to her. Amberstar somehow gets Whitecough and intentionally visits the Dark Forest to confront Mapleshade. She was about to kill her when she reveals her terrible past. She says that she was a ThunderClan cat who fell in love with a RiverClan cat, and lost her kits when she tried to cross the river to RiverClan. Her survived daughter, Lunarain, had a dog for a mate who was also Winnowstar's great great grandmother, and that she used her to get revenge on her daughter’s bloodline. Patchfoot sees Amberstar’s fainted body and gets her to the medicine den. In Amberstar‘s thoughts, she worries of seeing her kit die the way the three kits did or something terrible because of her promise to Mapleshade. Petalshine thinks how bad she and her brothers were to Amberstar and feels bad for her along with her brothers. She also remembers that Amberstar, as a kit, had nearly does a dark forest’s killing move, making her think she isn’t weak after all. Petalshine and her brothers and niece wait for a answer from Mothwing. Mothwing came to the others, feeling depressed. Petalshine asks if she is ok, however she said that Amberstar had died due to blood loss and Whitecough. Mothwing then tells to Rainkit that she will no longer be with her single mother. Rainkit, devastated, doesn’t believe it and goes to the medicine den and tries to wake Amberstar up. But it was no use. She was dead. She was gone forever. Rainkit mourns over the death of her only parent and her uncles and aunt sadly shed tears. Rainkit, still crying and mourning her mother, wished that she was cured and wished that she was the new RiverClan leader to honor her. In the meanwhile, Amberstar, as a spirit, confronts Mapleshade for one last time before heading to StarClan, saying that she no longer lost everything, and that Mapleshade was wrong. Leaving her siblings, daughter, Clanmates and deceased body behind, Amberstar finally meets up with all of her friends and loved ones in StarClan. In the post credit scene, Rainkit, Now Rainstar, becomes the next RiverClan leader.
